UTM builder with ad platform templates

Build a link with utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign in a minute: templates fill in the source, medium and dynamic parameters for Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising and Meta. The builder warns about spaces, capital letters and missing tags, and bulk mode tags a whole list of pages at once.

    History: last 10 copied links

      Everything is calculated in your browser — nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

      How to use it

      1. Paste the URLThe full page URL with https://. Existing parameters and the #fragment are kept — tags go before #.
      2. Pick a templateA template fills in the source, medium and the ad platform’s dynamic parameters. Enter the campaign and ad names yourself.
      3. Review the warningsThe builder flags missing tags, capital letters, spaces and non-Latin characters — everything that splits one campaign into several report rows.
      4. Copy the link“Copy” also saves the link to this browser’s history. For dozens of pages, use the “Link list” tab.

      What UTM tags are and why you need them

      UTM tags are parameters in a link’s URL that tell analytics tools where a visitor came from. The name comes from the Urchin Tracking Module — Urchin was the company Google bought and turned into Google Analytics. Today Google Analytics 4, most other analytics tools and most CRMs understand them.

      Without tags, a click from a newsletter often looks like “direct” traffic, and a LinkedIn post looks like a referral with no campaign name. With tags you see which campaign, ad or post brought users who signed up and reached the key action.

      The five standard parameters

      • utm_source — the source: a specific platform or site (google, bing, facebook, linkedin, newsletter). Required.
      • utm_medium — the medium, the traffic type: cpc for pay-per-click, email, social, display, offline. Required.
      • utm_campaign — the campaign name or ID: a promotion, launch or newsletter. Required.
      • utm_content — the ad variant, creative or link position in an email. Helps compare ads within a campaign.
      • utm_term — the keyword or audience. In search ads it is usually filled dynamically.

      Parameter order does not matter. Tags go in the query string — after ? and before #: under the URI standard (RFC 3986) the fragment always comes last and is not sent to the server. If the URL already has parameters, tags are appended with &.

      How GA4 reads UTM tags

      Google Analytics 4 stores tags as session attributes: utm_source → “Session source”, utm_medium → “Session medium”, utm_campaign → “Session campaign”, utm_content → ad content, utm_term → keyword. From the source/medium pair GA4 derives the default channel group by its own rules: medium = email goes to Email, medium = cpc with a search engine source goes to Paid Search, a social source with a “paid…” medium goes to Paid Social, social goes to Organic Social. Non-standard values such as “offline” end up in Unassigned, so agree on a medium vocabulary up front. For printed codes at events, on flyers and business cards, the UTM QR code generator tags every placement at once with one convention.

      Naming rules

      • Lowercase only. GA4 is case-sensitive: “LinkedIn”, “linkedin” and “LINKEDIN” are three rows in a report.
      • No spaces or special characters. A space becomes %20 or +. Use “_” or “-”.
      • One vocabulary for the team. Keep a shared sheet of allowed utm_source and utm_medium values (cpc, email, social, referral) and a campaign naming pattern: 2026-10_webinar_onboarding.
      • No personal data. Never put an email, phone number or name in tags: URLs end up in logs, analytics and other sites’ referral reports.

      Ad platform dynamic parameters

      In ad accounts one link serves hundreds of ads, so instead of fixed values it contains macros that the platform replaces on click with the campaign ID, ad ID or keyword. The builder does not encode macro braces, or the platform would not recognize them.

      Google Ads (ValueTrack)

      utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaignid}&utm_content={adgroupid}&utm_term={keyword} {matchtype} — keyword match type {device} — device type

      Microsoft Advertising

      utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={CampaignId}&utm_content={AdGroupId}&utm_term={keyword} {MatchType} — match type {Device} — device type

      Meta ads

      utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}&utm_term={{adset.name}} {{placement}} — placement {{site_source_name}} — Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or Audience Network

      Click IDs — gclid, msclkid, fbclid — are never added by hand: the platforms append them. Newsletters, organic posts and offline media have no macros — write values by hand and make a separate link for each ad or email.

      Common tagging mistakes

      • UTM tags on internal links. A homepage banner tagged utm_source=site starts a new session with a new source, so a sign-up that came from Google Ads is credited to “site”. Use events for internal navigation.
      • Inconsistent case and synonyms. “fb”, “Facebook” and “facebook.com” split one source into three. A vocabulary and lowercase values fix it.
      • Tags after the fragment. /page#form?utm_source=google — parameters after # are not part of the query string and are not read as UTM. The builder always puts them before #.
      • A hard-coded gclid or fbclid. These identify one specific click: copied into a link, they attribute all visits to that click.
      • Tags on links that redirect. If the site redirects http to https or the bare domain to www and drops the query string, the tags are lost. Check the final URL in a browser.
      • Links that are too long. HTTP (RFC 9110) sets no URI length limit and recommends supporting at least 8,000 characters, but email clients, messengers and URL shorteners can be stricter. Keep links under 2,000 characters.

      Tags tell you where a user came from. What they do next — whether they reach the key action — is the activation funnel. To turn an activation lift into money, use the activation revenue calculator.

      FAQ

      How do I create a UTM link?

      Paste the page URL into the builder and fill in at least utm_source (the platform), utm_medium (the traffic type) and utm_campaign (the campaign name). The builder adds the tags to the query string before any #fragment, encodes the values and shows the finished link to copy.

      Which UTM tags should I use for Google Ads?

      Typically utm_source=google, utm_medium=cpc, utm_campaign={campaignid}, utm_content={adgroupid} and utm_term={keyword}. The braces are ValueTrack parameters that Google Ads replaces on click. If Google Ads is linked to GA4 with auto-tagging, GA4 uses gclid for campaign data, but UTM tags still help other tools and your CRM.

      Which UTM parameters are required?

      utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. Without source and medium, analytics cannot assign the visit to a channel; without a campaign, to a specific promotion. utm_content and utm_term are optional.

      Where do I see UTM traffic in GA4?

      In Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, switch the primary dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign. Explorations let you add Session manual ad content and Session manual term.

      Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

      Yes. GA4 treats “Newsletter” and “newsletter” as different values, which splits reports. Keep all values lowercase — the builder does this by default.

      Do I need UTM tags if I have gclid or fbclid?

      Click IDs only pass data to their own ecosystem: gclid to Google Analytics and Google Ads, fbclid to Meta. UTM tags are understood by every analytics tool and CRM, so they are usually used together with auto-tagging.

      Why not use UTM tags on internal site links?

      Clicking a tagged link starts a new session with a new source. A user who came from an ad and then clicks an internal banner with tags is credited to your own site, and the ad report loses the conversion.

      Are my links stored anywhere?

      Only in your browser: the last 10 copied links are kept in local storage and nothing is sent to a server. “Clear” deletes the history.
